Changes at As You Wish!

More than six years ago, I started out on an incredible journey as a small business owner. In that time, I have learned so much and met so many great people. It is truly a time that I would not change for anything. About a year ago, as a planner, I did the unthinkable. On a whim, I decided to pursue a personal opportunity and move to Colorado at the end of 2011. While it has taken a year to get my business affairs in order and get my last clients married, I am finally ready to spread my wings and leave New Jersey.

The first thing people ask when I tell them about my cross-country move is, "What is going to happen to your business?" For right now, the best answer I can give is that I am hitting the Pause Button. I can guarantee that this isn't the end. We are no longer accepting brides in New Jersey, but this may change in the future. For right now, I am going to focus my full time and energy on my new life in Colorado. For the first time, I'm planning nothing and letting life lead the way.

While planning the wedding, Marcia and I discovered we had a mutual love for the New Kids On The Block. I made a KNOTB garter for her. Her reaction was priceless.

Ed had one of the most romantic reactions to seeing his bride that I have ever seen. It was beyond sweet.

Ed's only flaw is that he is a Boston fan. But don't worry, I hexed the cake. Have you seen how the Boston teams have been doing lately? Don't mess with a Giants fan.

Marcia & Ed's wedding was one of my favorite weddings of the year. Not only was their taste impeccable but they are the sweetest people on earth. I enjoyed every moment of planning their wedding with them. Even though Hurricane Irene hit the night of their wedding, the dance floor was never anything nothing less than packed. Everyone had an amazing time!

New Office Hours

As a wedding planner, I like to be available to my clients whenever they need me. Lately, that has meant in the mornings, in the evenings, and even in the middle of the night when I often get up and respond to emails (NOT a healthy habit!). In order to be a better wedding planner, I need to create a little bit of balance while still being available to my clients when needed. I have come up with brand new office hours. Since some clients are only available in the mornings or at night, I have created a schedule to please everyone!

Starting September 7th, here is when you can reach me:

Monday: 4pm to 10pm

Tuesday: 4pm to 10pm

Wednesday: 9am to 3pm

Thursday: 4pm to 10pm

Friday: 9am to 3pm

*Saturday & Sunday are by appointment only based on our wedding schedule.

During the times above, you'll be able to call us, email us, or schedule meetings with us! In the other times, you can find me working on my business, reading my nook, drinking a glass of local wine, or traveling - all things that I look forward to doing this fall in between planning some really, awesome weddings!

How I Would Plan Ali & Roberto's Wedding!

Last night on The Bachelorette, Ali made her decision. Overlooking the gorgeous water in Bora Bora, Roberto proposed to Ali. They have plans to wed next spring and I have already planned out the details for them!

I think that Ali & Roberto should have a tropical wedding, possibly right back where they solidified their love for each other in Bora Bora. The wedding will be full of vibrant colors to match Ali's sunny personality. The wedding details will be tropical inspired using pinks, oranges, yellows and greens. The flowers will be straight from the tropics: hyacinths, orchids, and plumeria. Given Ali's personality and dress choices on the show, I think she'd look beautiful in Coco by Amsale. It's the perfect mix of fun and tradition in a casually elegant way. Her hair should be loosely curled with a tropical flower to complete the look. Most importantly, Ali & Roberto would be surrounded by their friends family enjoying great food, drinks and of course........dancing the salsa!

Reader Question: Should I invite all my bridesmaids dress shopping?

Question: I have a large bridal party of six girls. I am having a hard time coordination schedules. Is it important to have all of my bridal party with me when I go dress shopping for my dress and their bridesmaid dresses?

Answer: Having a group of your nearest and dearest friends and family members seems like the ideal way to pick out dresses. In reality, it can be a huge stress. With so many people, it's unlikely you will easily find a date when everyone can attend. More importantly, when you have too many people you have too many opinions. Oftentimes you'll end up going with what the group thinks you should buy over what you really want. Although their opinions are valuable, it is your wedding. Bring your mom, Maid of Honor, or close friend. Narrow it down to a few choices and then bring the other girls in for the final decision.

Reader Question: Can I invite guests to the shower who aren't invited to the wedding?

Question: My daughter is having a small wedding with just close friends and family. Is it OK to invite guests to her shower that will not be invited to the wedding?

Answer: The short and sweet answer here is NO! When you get an invitation to the shower, you can expect to get an invitation to the wedding. It is considered extremely discourteous to invite a guest to any pre-wedding event but not the wedding. It will come across like the guest is good enough to give a gift at the shower, but not important enough to be invited to the wedding. If she is keeping the wedding guest list short, keep your shower guest list just as short.

At the end of the day, you don’t want people to look back and think that their “presents” were welcome but not their “presence.”

Eventology Wrap-Up!

This week I was in Indianapolis for Eventology 2010, an educational conference for wedding professionals. I met over 100 amazing planners and professionals from all over the country while discovering a city I had never visited before. I learned more than I could ever have imagined while at the conference. The lineup of speakers was perfectly balanced between the business side and the creative side of wedding planning: Linnyette Richardson-Hall, Ali Phillips, Harmony Walton, Saundra Hadley, NaShara Mitchell, Sasha Souza, Terrica Skaggs, & Lara Casey.

We were lucky enough to have the entire event documented by the talented Epic Motion (Day 1 & Day 2) and Jen Lynne Photography.

The best part was all of the new friends I made. I met some of the coolest people and now have a nationwide support system. For any planners debating whether they should attend next year, I whole-heartedly say yes!

Wish Upon A Wedding was founded in San Francisco, CA, in January of 2010, by a group of wedding and business entrepreneurs and is America’s FIRST nonprofit wedding wish granting organization, producing weddings and civil union ceremonies at destinations across the United States for individuals facing terminal illness, regardless of sexual orientation.

Who Is Behind Wish Upon A Wedding?

Many influential people in the industry are beginning to endorse Wish Upon A Wedding & you can find those endorsements on the website. There are also amazing people sitting on the Boards and Advisory Panel throughout the US such as Dana Larue Stiebel “Broke-Ass Bride” {LA Chapter PR Chair}, Leila Khalil {National PR Advisor}, Beth Helmstetter {National Outreach Director} just to name a few. They would love to have you join as well either as a board member or wish granter!

How We Grant Wishes:

To qualify for Wishes, applicants must be unmarried legal citizens of the United States, over the age of 18, who have been diagnosed with less than three years to live. Couples can be granted wishes either in the chapter where they live or in a chapter of their choosing as long as they are able to make the trip.

Couples can simply apply online to request one of three wedding types:

URGENT (Up to 10 guests, in hospital or at bedside);

BOUTIQUE (up to 25 guests, in home town of applicant);

ROMANTIC (Up to 50 guests, at any WUW destination)

How Can You Grant Wishes?

As the organization is building, Wish Granters are needed in all locations. Please apply online today to start helping Wedding Wishes come true. In two weeks, Wish Upon A Wedding will be granting the very first wish. To read more about that wish and the couple please visit the website.

Please use this info on your own blog and during the course of this week...if you have the time and the room on your blog this week.

It will help build a network of very important people in this industry whose main goal is to help these very deserving couples. Real Wedding: Carla & Cian - The Details

Carla and Cian held their tented wedding at a private family residence in Glen Ridge, NJ. They wanted a personal, relaxed and fun fall wedding. We incorporated wheat throughout, the Christian symbol for prosperity. Check out some of the incredible details of their day:

All guests were greeted by trays of spiked Arnold Palmers in mason jars (which became a crowd favorite which flowed all night!).

The bride and groom wanted their guests to be comfortable, so Cian provided his close friends with matching Chuck Taylors!

The menu was upscale bbq cuisine including ribs and corn on the cob. We created custom wetnaps to keep the guests fingers clean!

The centerpieces were in mason jars to tie in with the signature drinks.

I had the perfect team behind me to make Carla and Cian's day flawless.

Real Wedding: Ali & Wes

Back in June, I had the total planners nightmare. I had a tented wedding on a day where we got 3" of rain. It was muddy and the conditions were less than ideal, but the guests that came to celebrate Ali & Wes had more fun than I have seen at almost any wedding. With a great team of pro's behind me and a cold for two weeks to follow, Ali & Wes became husband and wife.

A few weeks ago during lunch at TGI Fridays, I discovered the Pink Punk Cosmo (which led to this Cotton Candy Wedding Inspiration Board.) It's essentially a regular old cosmo, but your martini glass comes with fluffy cotton candy inside, which disintegrates into the cosmo once it's poured. This is such a fun idea to use in your wedding with your signature drink. The cotton candy just adds a hint of sweetness, so you could really do this with any drink without altering the flavor. Don't hesitate to play around with the drink or the color. This could easily be adapted with yellow cotton candy and a lemon drop martini or blue cotton candy with a blue lagoon!

Sea Glass Bridal Jewelry

On a recent trip to Grand Turk, I found a small shop called the Dizzy Donkey. Amongst other island treasures, they carried handmade sea glass jewelry. It was the most unique and beautiful item being sold on the island. The colors of sea glass are incredible and would make awesome and unique bridal jewelry.

You could keep it simple with a white pendant, or a colored pendant for your bridesmaids.

I love the combination of clear sea glass with white beads on these earrings.

From the moment I arrived until the moment I left on Alana & Brian's wedding day, there was non-stop happiness. There was singing, dancing, karaoke-ing, and many spontaneous sing-alongs by the bridal party. The happiness never stopped.

The bridal party sang "Going to the Chapel" every few minutes throughout the entire morning.

Inspiring Words!

In my long list of blog posts that I read and people that I follow on Twitter, something really hit me last month. Lara Casey posted about her catch phrase, "Get Excited and Make Things Happen." She challenged her readers to come up with their own. While I'm not sure that it qualifies as a catch phrase, there is one quote that motivates me each and every day. I was doing a site visit for a corporate meeting in the summer of 2006 at the JW Marriott Desert Ridge Resort. In the gift shop (which is AMAZING by the way) I saw a plaque with the quote: "Only she who attempts the absurd can achieve the impossible." I was blown away by those 10 words. The plaque was too heavy to take back on the plane with me during that trip, but I thought about it straight through my next visit a few months later. Because of that plaque, that following fall, I had started my business and it is now hanging on my office wall.

Ideally, we only get married once. Many of the items you purchased for your wedding (bird cage, card box, ring pillow, etc) will never be used again. Rather than throwing them away, sell them. Before purchasing them, look to past brides who may be able to donate their gently used items to you for a fraction of what they paid or for free. Check with relatives, family, and friends. Also look to places like Craigslist, wedding message boards, and bridal barter websites. Bride Share is a new site that allows you to exchange goods and ideas to make planning a little easier on your wallet!

Honeymoon Series: Trunk Bay!

Trunk Bay on the island of St. John in the US Virgin Islands is one of the most photographed beaches in the world. And with good reason! It's absolutely breathtaking. You aren't limited to seeing Trunk Bay if you are staying on St. John. There is a daily ferry from St. Thomas to St. John. It's quick and easy. From there you can take a cab or open air bus through the winding mountains and see Trunk Bay from above before arriving. There is a set snorkeling trail that you can follow if you are new to snorkeling. All of your snorkel equipment can be rented on the beach. There are full service facilities near the beach as well. It's a beautiful way to spend the day while in the Virgin Islands!

One tip: If you are staying on the islands, check and see which days there will not be cruise ships in. This is a common excursion on most cruise ships, so you may want to pick a day when less ships are in port.

Warwick Valley Winery Wedding Venue!

The Pane Cafe has some of the most unbelievably delicious sandwiches and pizza you'll ever eat. My personal recco? I can't give just one. Don't leave without trying the Riesling, Black Dirt Blush, and Harvest Moon Wines with the Roasted Turkey Breast Sandwich which has fresh compote, cheddar cheese and bacon. A few months back, I discussed honeymoon registries. I still do believe that it's a great alternative for couples who have been living together and have most of their housewares. However, there are a few things to watch out for when selecting your Honeymoon Registry to make sure that it's right for you.

Honeymoon Registries act almost like a bank account. Your registry consists of anticipated activities and trips, and your guests can pay into those activities. You get a check or deposit for that money and can use it accordingly once a gift is given. From that money, the registry takes up to 8.85% to cover their costs. Be aware of these fees.

Also take into account that the excursions and items you register for may not get purchased. However, in order to ensure that you can take advantage of them, you may need to book them well in advance. You will need to front that money with no guarantee that someone will purchase it for you. Register wisely to avoid purchasing items you ultimately cannot afford.

Watermelon Sangria Recipe

A few weeks ago when I visited one of my favorite spots in NYC, Vero Wine Bar, I tried the Watermelon Sangria. It's a perfect, refreshing summer treat!

Ingredients

2 pounds of seedless watermelon, peeled and cubed plus 1/2 pound of watermelon cut into balls with a melon baller and skewered onto picks
1 bottle of white wine (preferably a sweeter wine - rose, Riesling, etc.)
5 ounces of vodka
4 ounces of Triple Sec
4 ounces of Simple Syrup
Ice

Directions

In a blender, puree watermelon cubes. Combine watermelon, white wine, vodka, Triple Sec, and Simple Syrup. Refrigerate until cold. Serve over ice and garnsih with watermelon skewers.

Honeymoon Series: Isla Mujeres

On a trip to Cancun last summer, I stayed at the Cancun Palace. One of the available excursions was to spend the day on Isla Mujeres, The Island of Women. We boarded a bus and took the short ten minute drive to the ferry which took us to Isla Mujeres.The island is only 5 miles long by a half mile wide. There is a small downtown area with shops and restaurants.

Having traveled extensively throughout the Caribbean, I was blown away by what I found when I get to Isla Mujeres. Our boat tour took us to Playa Norte, or North Beach. The water off of North Beach was the clearest water I have ever seen. There was no seaweed, no fish, just white sand and gorgeous water. We were in absolute awe of this beach. If you are anywhere in the Cancun area, this is the one place you MUST visit.

With our stay at the Cancun Palace, we had the ability to resort-hop to any of the Palace Resorts and stay and eat. Our excursion led us to the Isla Mujeres Palace, a resort focused more on honeymooners. It was much quieter than it's Cancun Counterparts. If you visit any of the Palace Resorts (which I highly recco!) make sure to visit the Cancun Palace and eat at the Hibachi Restaurant, Miyako. It ranks in the top 10 meals I have ever eaten in my life!

The resort features only 62 rooms, all of which have balconies. There are 4 couples spa rooms and 5 individual spa rooms. It's an all-inclusive resort with two swim up bars (order a BLUE LAGOON!), a pool, as well as a beautiful beach.

If you're looking for more than a honeymoon, you can have
your wedding here on the beach as well.

Real Wedding: Shannon & Matt

Back in May, I got the pleasure of working with Shannon & Matt during their wedding at the Forsgate Country Club. During her entire planning process, Shannon was in law school and preparing to take the bar exam (as if a bride doesn't have ENOUGH on her plate already!). I got to know her parents during the planning process but it wasn't until close to the wedding that I got to know Shannon. She is such a sweetheart and I am so happy that she got the wedding of her dreams!

At the end of the night, I went into our holding room as I started to prepare for pack-up. As I approached the bridal suite, I heard some very loud giggling. I opened the door and found a group of superheroes looking back at me. Some of the guests planned a special surprise for the bride and groom. Thank goodness they thought it was funny!

It was such a pleasure working with Shannon, Matt, and Shannon's family. I wish you guys a lifetime of happiness!

Honeymoon Series: Westin Diplomat &

Right down the road from Miami is Hollywood, Florida. If the glitz, glamour, and prices of Miami are too much, Hollywood is the next best thing. You can enjoy the nightlife of Miami and then take a short 20 minute ride back to the Westin Diplomat Resort & Spa.

The lobby is nothing short of spectacular. The open air feel makes you instantly feel like you are in paradise.

The resort has 898 guest rooms and 100 suites. The hotel was recently refurbished and many eco-friendly products were used during construction. One restaurant you don't want to miss at the resort if Hollywood Prime. It's a steak and seafood restaurant with a very extensive wine list. My personal recco is the filet mignon. It was so good that I had it twice during my stay at the Diplomat!

The pools at the Westin Diplomat are out of this world. They cover a ton of ground so there's never a problem finding a chair. You have the option of private cabanas with butler service if you're looking for a private, intimate pool experience.

It's tough to see from up above, but the pools are actually layered. The circle in the center is glass, so when you are in the lower pool, you can watch the people swimming above you. At night, the pools light up in brilliant hues.

When you are ready to leave resort grounds, head straight across the street to Nikki Marina. The restaurant features an awesome menu of seafood and sushi. You can opt for outdoor seating right on the marina or inside, where the tables have plush pillows for your comfort. The back level of seating is full sized beds. Your dinner will be delivered to you in bed.

In case you needed any more convincing that the Diplomat is a great honeymoon destination, the Westin Diplomat was the venue where the lucky recipients of Us Magazine's Dream Wedding was held in 2008.

Roasted Tomato Soup Recipe

I love tomato soup. Follow this recipe for the best tomato soup you'll ever taste!

Ingredients:

3 pounds fresh tomatoes (mix of fresh heirlooms, cherry, vine and plum tomatoes)
6 cloves garlic, peeled
1 large yellow onions, sliced
1/2 cup of extra virgin olive oil
3/4 of a quart chicken stock
2 bay leaves
4 tablespoons butter
1/2 cup chopped fresh basil leaves
3/4 cup heavy cream
sea salt and pepper

Directions:

Preheat oven to 425 degrees F.

Chop all of the tomatoes into small chunks. Spread the tomatoes, garlic cloves and onions onto a cookie sheet. Drizzle with 1/2 cup of olive oil and season with salt and pepper. Roast for 30 minutes, or until caramelized.

Remove roasted tomatoes, garlic and onion from the oven and transfer to a large stock pot. Add the chicken stock, bay leaves, and butter. Bring to a boil, reduce heat and simmer for 20 minutes or until liquid has reduced by a third.

Chop basil leaves and add to the pot. Use an immersion blender to puree the soup until smooth. Return soup to low heat and add cream. Serve garnished with a vine tomato and basil leaf.

Honeymoon Series: JW Marriott Desert Ridge Resort

If you make it to the Phoenix area for your honeymoon, take the short drive to Scottsdale to eat at the Italian restaurant named Sassi. They hold weddings and events there if you're interested in a destination event. The food is excellent, but the real draw is the beautiful design of the restaurant.

The glass candle holders on each table are made by a local artist who designs especially for the restaurant. He just loves what he does and wished to remain anonymous. Eventually, after much persistence, he decided to sell them at the restaurant. They are rare, so if you have the opportunity to purchase one, it makes a great gift to bring home. I have one and it's one of my favorite pieces in my home.

I love that this restaurant is made up of different rooms. Each room has a different layout, rather than one larger room. There is always something new to discover around every corner.

If you were to have your wedding at Sassi, it could be held on the lawn with the gorgeous desert backdrop.

Your cocktail hour or any other small event can be held on the patio. My personal dinner recco at Sassi? Hands down, the lamb!

While in Phoenix, The JW Marriott Desert Ridge Resort is one of the nicest hotels you can stay in. The grounds are stunningly beautiful, the hotel is immaculate, and the food is to die for. There are 81 suites and 950 guest rooms, yet the resort never feels crowded. You are surrounded by the desert and mountains. It's truly a gorgeous oasis retreat.

You'll never go hungry at the Desert Ridge Resort. For casual dining, head to Blue Sage and order the blue corn pancakes. For more formal dining, dine outside overlooking the fountains and mountains at Tuscany. You cannot under any circumstances go to Phoenix without stopping at Tuscany and trying their gnocchi. I have been trying to replicate their recipe for two years now with no look. It's incredible. The Meritage Steakhouse is another great option. The cow-patterned chair give the steakhouse an authentic feel, but the firepits and flat screen tv's add a bit of comfort.

Relaxation is inevitable when you open the doors to the Desert Ridge Spa. You are immedately calmed by the fountain centerpiece in the foyer. There are 41 rooms where you can get anything from a mani/pedi to a romantic couples massage.

There is nothing better than laying out in the pool, lazy river, or hot tub and seeing an 18 hole golf course up against the backdrop of the desert mountains. It's absolutely breathtaking.

Other great hotels to stay at in Arizona are the Fairmont Scottsdale Princess and the JW Marriott Starr Pass Resort (the entire hotel does a complimentary tequila shot every night at 5pm!). Consult with the Arizona Guide for more information on traveling to Arizona.

Specialty wedding cakes can range anywhere from $5-$25 per slice and up. Depending on the flavors, materials, and handmade details in your cake, you could be facing a pretty large bill. If you're on a tight budget, cut down on the cake. If the specialty cake look is what you are going for, have a smaller dream cake made. It'll be much cheaper to do a very detailed cake for 50 people and have sheet cake reserved for the guests than a detailed wedding cake for 250 people. People will never know the difference!

Honeymoon Series: St. Maarten!

My favorite island of all time is St. Maarten so it was the obvious choice for the first honeymoon location feature.

St. Maarten is located in the Lesser Antilles, about 150 southeast of Puerto Rico. The island is half Dutch, half French. The French side is spelled St. Martin, the Dutch side is spelled St. Maarten. English is spoken throughout the island, but you'll hear both Dutch and French spoken on their respective sides of the island. The 37 square mile island has 37 white sand beaches.

Getting to St. Maarten has never been easier. You can now take direct flights to the island on Contintal Airlines, American Airlines, US Air, United Airlines, Delta Airlines, Spirit Airlines, and Jet Blue Airlines. It's a three and a half hour flight from New York City.

Sonesta Great Bay Beach Resort & Casino

The Sonesta Great Bay Beach Resort & Casino is a three star resort located on the dutch side of the island. It is a quick 25 minute drive from the airport and a short ten minute walk to downtown Phillipsburg where you can find shopping, dining, and nightlife. There are 257 rooms as well as a casino, spa, tennis court, activity center, and one mile beach. Prices start at $205 per night. All Inclusive and Honeymoon Packages are available.

The Westin St. Maarten Dawn Beach Resort & Spa

The Westin is only a 20 minute drive from the airport. The 308 room hotel has a casino, fitness room, spa, and scuba shop. It also features the island's largest freshwater infinity pool with a swim up bar and hot tub.

St. Maarten is called the "culinary capitol of the Caribbean" so food is a main focus. If you didn't want to, you wouldn't have to even leave the hotel property to experience the incredible cuisine. The resort has two oceanfront fine dining restaurants, a poolside cafe, lobby and pool bars, as well as room service.

Rooms begin at $149 per night and do offer a Honeymoon Package.

Restaurant Le Cottage

If you do want to venture out and experience the amazing food, you must check out Restaurant Le Cottage. My personal recco? Anything from the Local Lobster Tasting Menu. The restaurant is known for it's foie gras and wine list, so don't hesitate to ask the experts to help you pair a wine with your meal.

The Butterfly Farm

One of the most popular attractions on the island is the butterfly farms. It is an enclosed farm that you can walk through at your leisure as the butterflies fly around. The best time to experience the butterfly farm is in the morning when the butterflies come out of their cocoon and take their first flight.

Phillipsburg Shopping

My favorite thing to do in St. Maarten is shop. Old Street in Phillipsburg is filled with local shops, outlets (such as Tiffany's and Coach), and small cafes.

The islands are a great place to buy jewelery. Ballerina Jewelers are the best jewelers on the island. If you're in the market for something sparkly, don't go to any other shop. Go straight to Ballerina Jewelers and ask for Michael. You'll get the best, most reputable deals on the island.

Another can't miss stop is Last Mango In Paradise. It has all-things Jimmy Buffet. You won't miss it - there is a huge 7 foot shark out front that's perfect for a unique photo-op.

Guavaberry Liqueur is made right on the island. Head in for a free sample. It's the perfect stop to get out of the heat, try something new, and get some really unique souvenirs. It's the perfect thing to bring home and break out on your first anniversary to re-live your honeymoon.

Guavaberry Colada

Put ice in a blender. Add 2 ounces of Sint Maarten Guavaberry, 1 ounce of Cream of Coconut, 3 ounces of pineapple pieces or juice. Blend well. Garnish with Pineapple, toasted coconut, and fresh nutmeg.

You'll know you have arrived in the right place when you see this courthouse, which is often the main star of local artwork.

You do need a passport to get onto the island and to get back into the United States. There is a departure tax of $30 per person for international destinations ($10 per person for Netherlands Antilles destinations) which you can pay at the airport or at your resort. Ask the front desk for assistance. Average temperature in the winter is 80 degrees Fahrenheit and 84 degrees Fahrenheit in the summer. Specialty Cake: Christian Louboutin Shoes!

I love specialty cakes. Many people overlook the wedding cake and choose something plain and simple. It's one of the last details they think about so it often gets overlooked. When people come to a wedding they love to see those little details that make your wedding stand out, and your cake is one of the first places they will look. Take the time to make it stand out. Get creative. If a specialty cake is more your style, have a unique cake made in addition to your wedding cake. Or, have a groom's cake at your rehearsal dinner. For my friend Jannet's wedding, I had an amazing shower cake made in the shape of one of her favorite things: Christian Louboutin shoes!

Not only did it look incredible, but the cake tasted great too. We chose vanilla cake with chocolate icing. It was SO delicious, it completely exceeded my expectations.

I had the cake made by Wendy's Cake Art in NJ. I can't say enough about them. The customer service was great, the prices were great, and there is no denying that it looked just like a shoe and shoebox!

NYC Restaurant Recco!

When I was a freshman in college, I went for my first real interview at Vero in New York City. I was a complete nervous wreck and could barely eat, so I just ordered a caesar salad. Not only did I land the internship, but I ordered the best caesar salad I have ever had. Since then, I have been back many times. A few weeks ago I had dinner at the new Midtown location with the amazing Tammy Golson. Every Monday, you get a free panini when you order a drink. It was a great meeting over panini's, caesar salad, and watermelon sangria. They have a ton of outdoor seating. It's a great spot to check out if you're looking for a night out in the city.

Save On Champagne!

Having champagne at your wedding can get very costly very quickly. Check your bar package to see if champagne is included. Oftentimes, there is only a champagne toast included with the option to upgrade your open bar to include champagne all night. If pricey champagne all night long is not in your budget, serve it just for the cocktail hour. Most people will not drink champagne all night anyway, they just have a glass or two to get the party started. By the end of the night, no one is even aware that champagne is no longer an option. If you are being charged on a consumption basis for the champagne, serve it as a champagne cocktail rather than a full glass of champagne. It'll last twice as long that way. Try a bellini, kir royale, or mimosa. You'll still get that elegant champagne feel for a smaller price tag.

If you need champagne suggestions, I have three. My top pick for a more inexpensive, sweet champagne, try the Martini & Rossi Asti. For a local champagne, try the Carpe Diem from Brotherhood Winery in Washingtonville, NY. If you want to go all out, my favorite champagne is the Veuve Clicquot Rose.

Vendor Meal Etiquette

Q: "Do I need to have a table in the main ballroom for the vendors?"

A: Nope! It is not necessary or expected. Your vendors have very little time to sit down and eat during your wedding, so the majority of the night, you'll have an empty table. This is also a good time for the vendors to sit, chat, and network about the business, which we may not be able to do as easily in the ballroom. There's no need to purchase additional escort cards, centerpieces, linens, china, etc. to accommodate your vendors. Speak with your venue contact in advance and set up a vendor table in a back room or in the cocktail space. What you feed your vendors is also up to you and your venue. Some venues give the option of the same food as the guests are eating, while others opt for a boxed-meal for a smaller fee. Make sure to check your contracts, as many wedding professionals have clauses about meals.

Cupcake Photography Contest

My friends Jannet, Angela, and I are obsessed with cupcakes. Everywhere we go, we eat cupcakes. It's a topic of conversation every time we get together. We have a plan to someday travel the country eating cupcakes and blogging about it. A regular feature on this blog will be cupcakes - so this post is just the beginning. I can't think of a better way to spend Wellness Wednesday than by looking at (and hopefully eating!) cupcakes. This week, I want to share a cupcake contest. Baked By Melissa bakes mini-cupcakes that are to-die-for. I love their small size because you get to indulge without completely over doing it.

Baked By Melissa is running a photography contest. Take a picture with their cupcakes and you could win $500 and 100 cupcakes! Entries must be sent in by August 15. I am going on a Caribbean cruise for vacation on August 13th and am planning to bring the cupcakes with me on board and get some awesome shots to send in! This contest is the perfect excuse to indulge!

Cut Down Your Guest List!

When you are planning a wedding on a budget, the very first thing you should look at is your guest list. Keep in mind that there is more to a per-guest price than just food. Even adding one or two guests can throw off the balance of an entire room. You'll need more tables, additional centerpieces, favors, invitations, menu cards, programs, and place cards. Suddenly, what looked like a quick add just made your overall budget jump. Weddings are no longer a race to see who can fill the largest church. Couples are looking for small, intimate time with the people most important to them. Try to keep your list to people that you know well. If you think you'll look back on your wedding photographs in ten years and not know who the people are nor think you'll still be in touch with them, this budget cut should be an easy decision.

Lemonade Bar

One of my upcoming weddings is featuring a Lemonade Bar during their cocktail hour. It's something that your guests will love to drink and it looks beautiful too! Here are some lemonade variations that you could include in a lemonade bar or as your signature drink:

Purple Basil Lemonade

In this recipe, basil is crushed with sugar to release the oils. If you don't have a mortar and pestle, process the basil, sugar, and about 1/4 cup of the water in a food processor or blender.

Yield: 4 servings

Ingredients:

4 cups water - 1/2 cup fresh lemon juice - 1/2 cup loosely packed purple basil leaves (about 1/4 ounce) - 6 tablespoons sugar - 4 cups ice - 4 purple basil sprigs

Preparation:

Combine 4 cups water and juice in a large bowl. Place 1/2 cup basil and sugar in a mortar; pound with pestle until a paste forms. Add sugar mixture to juice mixture; stir until sugar dissolves. Strain mixture through a sieve over a bowl; discard solids. Place 1 cup ice in each of 4 glasses. Pour about 1 cup lemonade into each glass; garnish each serving with 1 basil sprig.

Vodka Thyme Lemonade

Yield: 8 servings

Ingredients:

2 cups sugar - 12 sprigs fresh thyme, plus more for garnish -4 cups freshly squeezed lemon juice, about 24 lemons -2 cups vodka

Preparation:

In a small saucepan, combine 2 cups water with the sugar and thyme; bring to a boil over high heat, stirring occasionally, until sugar has dissolved. Remove from heat; let cool to room temperature.
Pour mixture through a fine sieve into a large glass measuring cup; discard thyme. You should have 2 cups syrup. Cover with plastic; chill.
In a large serving pitcher, stir together lemon juice, vodka, and chilled syrup; garnish with thyme. Divide evenly among eight tumblers filled with ice; serve immediately.

This is a simple and relatively inexpensive way to make your event look elegant. Slice lemons, limes, and oranges into your lemonade and be sure to include large sprigs of the herbs you are incorporating to give it a punch of color.

Whichever recipe you choose, always make sure that the alcoholic versions are clearly marked and that there are non-alcoholic versions available.

Fill My Fall!

This weekend will mark the end of my "wedding season." My spring season began on March 28 and it's been a steady stream of weekend weddings ever since. It has been As You Wish Wedding & Event Design's busiest season yet - and I cannot even begin to thank those couples who made it possible. I am so lucky to be a part of a season full of memories for some amazing couples.

What I learned from this busy season is that there is nothing in the world I would rather be doing than planning weddings. It's been a crazy few months, but I have learned so much and can't even call what I do work because I enjoy it so much. I really look forward to many more spring and summer seasons to come! But, it was so great, that I don't want to wait until next spring. I want you to Fill My Fall!

My goal is to fill up every weekend for myself and my consultants from September through December. We love what we do, and we want to do more of it. Times are tough and we want to help out as many people as we can, so we are slashing our Day-Of Coordination rates by HALF!

Aside from all of the great reasons to hire a Day-Of Coordinator (article to follow next week - check back!), we want to give you an extra incentive. 30 Day Shred!

A big part of Wellness Wednesdays will be exercising and living a healthy lifestyle. I will be the first to say that when my life gets busy and hectic, exercise becomes a low priority for me. One of my goals for this summer was to change that. A good friend recommended Jillian Michaels 30-Day Shred DVD to me for workouts on rainy days. I love to hate it. It's a a tough workout but it really gets the job done in a short amount of time. Each of the three workouts on the DVD are made of up quick circuits of Strength Training, Cardio, and Abs. Each workout lasts only 20 minutes, but it's non-stop. There are no breaks.

Whatever your workout routine, make sure that it is a priority! Happy Wellness Wednesday!

Frugal Flowers!

Wedding magazines are every girl's guilty pleasure. One drawback to them is that they often showcase flowers that are exotic and very expensive. All too often I have clients who have their hearts set on the exact centerpiece or bouquet that they see on one of those colorful, glossy pages. When they hear that the bloom in the photo is a rare orchid from New Zealand that is only available three weeks out of the year and that it costs $250 a stem, it changes everything. Have a firm floral budget worked out before you meet with your florist. Work with your florist to see what flowers are readily available within your price range during your time of the year. Always bring the photos that you fell in love with. Chances are, your florist will know of similar blooms and arrangements to make your floral dreams come true for much less!

Best Bridesmaids Dresses!

This past year has been the first year of my friends getting married in full force. I have personally come into contact with many bridesmaids dresses - the good, the bad, and the ugly. I won't get into which is which, but I have to gush about the dress I wore last week. It was comfortable, beautiful, and we got SO many compliments on it. Two Birds Bridesmaids dresses are a bridesmaid's dream. It's one dress, but convertible. You can tie it ten different ways (although we came across way more than ten if you get a little creative!) and it's one size fits all. I had a tough time believing that one size fits all, but it really is true.

I love this dress so that much that I already have my eye on this gorgeous champagne color!

There are so many colors available. They also offer two lengths: long and short. A pregnancy size is now available as well as a bandeau top to make bigger busted girls more comfortable.

This is the "Caroline" style - the way I chose to wear my dress for the wedding.

I love the bow tied around the neck in this photo. Next time I wear the dress, I am going to tie it that way!

We purchased our dresses from Bella Bridesmaid in Madison NJ. They were great to work with and we got the dresses earlier than expected.

Summer Book Recco's

The summer is the perfect time to pick up a good book to lose yourself in. Here are a few books I have read recently and recommend!

Become Your Own Matchmaker: 8 Easy Steps For Attracting Your Perfect Mate by Patti Stanger- All of you brides may be past the point of using this book, but if you're a fan of Millionaire Matchmaker, you'll love it! Patti Stanger narrates and personality just shines through. Take her advice with a grain of salt if you aren't focused on snagging a millionaire, but overall a very easy and fun read.

The Story of Edgar Sawtelle by David Wroblewski - I am not usually the type to run out and buy whatever book Oprah recommends, but this was a fantastic book. It's a little heavier, but a great read if you're looking to really get involved and attached to the characters. It's a very long book but worth reading every page.

My Horizontal Life by Chelsea Handler - Chelsea Handler is a comedic goddess. I saw her live earlier in the year and she blew me away. Her two books are super easy reads - I read them each in a day. My Horizontal Life was my favorite - I laughed outloud the whole time.

Are You There, Vodka? It's Me, Chelsea by Chelsea Handler - Another great comedy by Chelsea Handler. I have to admit that I got this on audiotape and would listen to it as I ran. I eventually had to stop because I would get in a zone and just laugh out loud. Downright embarassing. Listen at your own risk in the comfort of your own home.
The Beach House by Jane Green - I just finished this one today and it's incredible. The story takes place in Nantucket. Jane Green's descriptions of Nantucket make you want to pack up immediately and move there. I absolutely loved this book and have already ordered a few of Jane's other books to read over the rest of the summer!

And now...drumroll please...my favorite book of all time...

Straight Up And Dirty by Stephanie Klein - Hands down the best book I have ever read. So good that my copy has circulated through every one of my friends and colleagues and they all have the exact same reaction. The book is so honest and so real - you can really feel and relate to everything that Stephanie has gone through. Her writing is incredible. And the best part is that Stephanie is an incredible blogger so the story doesn't end when the book does. You can continue to read her story and read about her life every day. She is the first post I'll read through on my Google Reader and everyday I look forward to her tweets! If you are a woman in your 20's or 30's and you are going to read one book, it MUST be this one.

My Best Friends Wedding

Congratulations to Jannet & Rob!

This weekend, my best friend got married. It is such a different experience to be personally involved in a wedding rather than be coordinating it. It's a very emotional experience when your best friend gets married. This was especially evident in the amount of tears I shed throughout the day! As the Maid of Honor, it was a relatively stress free day for me, as Jannet used many of the wedding professionals that I use on a weekly basis. She used the best of the best and it was a flawless, well-executed day.

We just narrowly missed a storm but it wound up being a gorgeous afternoon! If you look closely there are starfish all along the aisle and awesome nautical rope ties with starfish on the aisle seats.

Jannet wore a Paloma Blanca Dress, style 3854 from Bijou Bridal.

She had these adorable fan programs that were a big hit in the July sun.

This photo brings tears to my eyes every time I see it! Her parents are some of the loveliest people I have ever met in my life.

First time as Mr. & Mrs.!

A few nautical details. The life preserver from Pottery Barn Kids was used as the guest book. Each guest signed with a silver paint pen.

I love the starfish in the sandbox!

The cake was red velvet (the bride's absolute favorite) and cannoli.

The bridesmaids all wore Two Birds Bridesmaids Dresses. I can't even begin to tell you how comfortable they were. We didn't want to take them off. We got so many compliments and I can legitimately say that I can (and can't wait to) wear it again!

Congratulations to Jannet & Rob! I can't thank you enough for allowing me to be a part of your special day. I love you both an insane amount and cannot wait for you to get home from your honeymoon! xoxo

Lower Your Wedding Costs

When you begin to plan your wedding, there are a few things to consider when choosing your wedding date if you want to save money. If you have the ability to be flexible, take a look at the month and day of the week that you can have your event. The biggest way to save is to have your wedding in the off-season. Try to avoid high season months like May, June, September, and October. This is prime-time for weddings and most professionals know they will book up so may be less likely to negotiate. You can save not only on your banquet hall, but most vendors will be much more flexible in their negotiating during those off months. Once you choose your month, consider a time other than Saturday night. Most people want that prime time slot. But, if you choose a Friday night, Saturday morning, or Sunday wedding, you will be looking at another large savings.

Shower Favors!

I am out of the office today because my best friend in the world is GETTING MARRIED! In her honor, I want to show you a few fun items that I used to throw her shower.

For the favors, we put together a candy buffet. I ordered the chinese food take out containers from Nashville Wraps. Then, I got these cute custom labels from Beau-Coup Party favors - which I love! They have a ton of different shapes, sizes, and designs.

One of my biggest concerns was having a great table scape. In order to make it not only look great, but also be personal, I chose these votive wraps from Wedding Things. From the moment I saw them, I knew I had to have them. They were a simple DIY project that made a huge impact. At the end of the event, everyone got to take a candle as well.

I lined up the candles along the floral centerpiece - which blew my mind when I saw it. Laurie from Laurelwood Designs designed it and it left me speechless! It was the perfect simple, clean, but stunning look I was going for.
